I've been seeing a lot of Chicago Typewriter posts these past few days. And all the memories from the drama, all the feels, my love for the trio of Joseon Youth Alliance came crashing back to me. And oh good heavens, they finally heard my prayers for this drama to gain more attention, and more love.
Reviewing a drama is not something I do, honestly. I just release my emotions in my Instagram, Twitter or Facebook feed, and that's all. But for the love of Joseon Youth Alliance, I've listed ten reasons why you should watch this drama, and at the same time, an appreciation post for the masterpiece that everyone should witness. Brace yourselves, I'll be fangirling all throughout this post. *wink
1. Story/Plot. Chicago Typewriter is not your typical kdrama. The plot comes with unpredictable storyline. The twists and turns of events are simply remarkable. Mapapaisip ka talaga to the point na magke-crave for the next episodes. Friendly bickering, romance, history and friendship, you can find everything you want in a drama when watching Chicago Typewriter. Hats off to the writer of this drama!
2. Characters. The characters are perfect! You might not agree with me but I'm telling you, the casts are an epitome of perfection. The flawless performance of Yoo Ah In for his character Han Se Joo (Seo Hwi Young in his past life), he perfectly played the brave yet cute image of his characters in both the present and 1930s time. The natural acting of Im Soo Jung which matched the cute and outspoken character of Jeon Sol (Ryu Soo Hyun); she makes acting look so effortless that I sometimes have to remind myself that she’s acting. And of course, the divine portrayal of Go Kyung Pyo with his character Yoo Jin Oh (Shin Yul) who showed his great love not only for his country but also his friends. The rest of characters are mysterious and unpredictable which made Chicago Typewriter a stunning masterpiece. Sino bang hindi mahu-hook bes?
3. Settings and Wardrobe. Stay still and let's appreciate the beauty of the background set of this drama. I love how there are flashbacks to the 1930s from time to time. The transition between the ‘present' and the 30s is just amazing; the production team did a really great job doing this. And I really can't get over how great all the actors look in their 30s outfit, the old-fashioned and vintage vibe of everything surrounding them is just surreal. If you're a fan of historical dramas, then this one is definitely for you.
4. Brief History Lesson. In addition to the amazing settings, this drama gave us a little taste of Korea during the Japanese occupation in their country. This drama made me appreciate my countries’ heroes more, those who fought for the liberated country we are living in right now.
5. The OSTs. The OSTs of this drama is simply amazing. The soothing voice of the group SALTNPAPER, the soulful vocals of SG Wannabe, Boni Pueri and Baek Yerin all added to the tearjerker ambiance of the drama; all the OSTs featured are hauntingly beautiful and somehow added to the melancholic and nostalgic mood of the drama. All the songs will surely will you give the “last song syndrome”.
6. The Trio. Most of the time while watching a drama, I fall in love with the lead, or the second lead actors. But this drama is different, I fell for not only one or two, but to the three characters! I just fell hard for the patriotic trio of Joseon Youth Alliance; I fell inlove with the bitter, arrogant and yet lovable Han Se Joo, the cute and pretty Jeon Sol, the boy-next-door cuteness and mysterious Yoo Jin Oh. I just love them all!
7. The Cinematography. The cinematography of this drama is outstanding! Daebak! The transition between the present and the 1930s, the vintage vibe, the “writer” theme. This drama was so well shot and put together. I really applaud the crew for doing such an amazing job.
8. The Bromance. Bromance has become a thing in Kdramas these days. And the bromance between Han See Joo and Yoo Jin Oh is hilariously fun to watch. The love-hate relationship between the two is entertaining, especially because Yoo Jin Oh seems to follow Han Se Joo around like a puppy, literally. And the friendship between them defied time and their differences. You'll surely love Han Se Joo and Yoo Jin Oh together, but prepare yourself, they will break your heart too.
9. Friendship. The friendship between the three is really captivating. Friendship goals? Yes. Indeed. The trio showed us that love comes in different forms, and love does not only come from a specific person, but from your friends and comrades too.
10. CHICAGO TYPEWRITER IS AN ART. If I may quote from one of my favorite books “She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn't supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.” Chicago Typewriter will make you feel all sorts of emotions you can think of. You will laugh, you will cry, you'll be angry, you'll get mad. You'll fall in love and you'll definitely get your heart broken. All those emotions will crush you into pieces and rebuild you again. Indeed, Chicago Typewriter is an art.
Chicago Typewriter does not only tell you a story, it makes you experience the story. It is an incredible story of love and friendship that defies time.
So, chingudeul, that’s my ten reasons why you should watch Chicago Typewriter (if you still haven't), an honest review and appreciation. Aren't you excited to witness a masterpiece?
